Nyc Christmas Raid

BY KENNETH LUNDGREN

During college, during the Christmas break, I bombed into Manhattan early Christmas morning on my bike, caught all the green lights, and just ripped through the city. Ghost town. Nothing, no one out and about. A bit surreal. I felt great and just zipped along, down to the end of the island and back again, a lap through Central Park for good measure. We don’t need no stinkin’ taxi!!! Ah, memories…

Not this year. The bikes hang on the wall. I took the Madone out during that 60-degree day. Err, a little rusty. When I ride, I never touch — the foot never touches the pavement — EVER. 30m, 4h ride, anything — I stay clipped it at all times. I came to a busy intersection in Ringwood and here I was trackstanding — only I found myself more wobbly than usual!!! C’mon light, turn GREEN! But, I didn’t touch 🙂

At the tennis club, I set up my locker for full commute mode. So I was out for a nice 30-mile spin, on the way to work, when it started raining. 🙁 I turned around. There goes that idea. I will look to commute twice a week. I am writing an article about commuting for Bicycling Magazine, so if anyone wants to chime in, feel free to PM or e-mail me!!! 🙂

This week, I am riding with Nick Bruno (remember him?) and Laura Winberry. Damn, the State Champion’s jersey looks good on her 🙂 With Nick, we’re going to get out there again, just shoot the (*censored*)(*censored*)(*censored*)(*censored*), get some easy miles in. Hopefully Laura will take it easy on us… Nick has the potential to be one of the big guns, but he’s not yet sure if he wants to make a commitment to a sport where there’s little financial return. Right now he’s doing his undergrad and wants to focus on a career, then perhaps focus more on cycling. When he reached that P12 level, he saw how deep the field was… If you want success up there, commitment needs to 100%.

If Nick wants it though, he can get it. Absolutely. He was just nipping the tip of that iceberg… We shall see…

For now, some mellow rides with Fat Coach. 🙂 Happy Holidays everyone and I hope everyone is doing well…

Sincerely,
